Light drinks with fruity flavors make great additions to any brunch. Choosing a cocktail that matches the type of food being served is key to the mid-morning meal. A Screwdriver or Melon Patch are wonderful matches for a fresh fruit brunch while a Bloody Mary works well with heartier foods.

If you like a little bubbly with your brunch but don’t want the champagne (I love champagne but sometimes I get a champagne headache) try a modified Bellini-Tini (modified by Tini…hehehehe).

Belinni-Tini

1 oz Vodka
1/2 oz Peach Schnapps
Tonic Water (I use Diet Tonic)

Shake Vodka and Peach Schnapps over ice to chill (you could try shaking it with the Tonic but I have a feeling that’s not a good idea) and pour into Champagne Glass. Top off with your Tonic Water and there you have it.

Here’s how to make a Martini Bellini that actually does have Champagne in it (and Rafaele is just adorable).

Making the perfect layered cocktail isn’t as hard you might think. The main concept is to pour your liquor or liqueurs you are using in order from heaviest to lightest (Spirit Density Chart). You may need to use a spoon so that upper layers can be poured very slow so that the liquid remains on the top. You may need to practice a bit to get eventually get it right…but mistakes are never wasted and who knows, you may discover a whole new non-layered cocktail in the process.

There are lots of great layered cocktails to make but my favorite (duh) is the Screaming Orgasm.

Screaming Orgasm (or as other people call it a “B-53″)

½ fl oz vodka

½ fl oz coffee liqueur aka Kahlua

½ fl oz Bailey’s Irish cream liqueur

1 shooter/shot glass

1 barspoon/teaspoon

You can chill the ingredients to make it nice an refreshing. Firstly take a shooter glass and pour in coffee liqueur. Next take a teaspoon and hold it to the edge of the glass. Now it’s time to layer Baileys. Finally, layer vodka over the top. Now your cocktail is ready to be served.

Here is an instructional video from Fine Living:

There are so many beautiful, delicious drinks that could use a little “bling” or what I like to call “frosting” by “rimming” the glass. Popular rims include are, of course, salt, sugar, cocoa powder, spices (for example on a Bloody Mary).

Rim your cocktail glass

you are unsure of how to do it. Mix that drink has a nice little “how to” at MixThatDrink.com. Basically you want to choose whether your rim should be be salty or sweet for taste. Bloody Mary’s and unflavored Martinis do best with salty or spicy and your tropical or “foo-foo drinks” work best with sugar rims. The best “glue” or what to use to get it all to stick is either s slice or lemon or lime.

You can use your imagination and mix your own, I’ve used cookie sprinkles in different colors, Nesquik chocolate milk power, and spicy rubs found in gourmet cooking stores for Bloody Mary’s. There are several companies that make nice little “cocktail kits” that are easy to use and also are fabulous gifts when going to someone’s house for dinner for a nice change from bringing a bottle of wine.

Tools: There are Drink Rimmers out there that are trays one with a sponge to wet the edge of your glass and then usually another tray for whatever rim flavor you are dipping into. There is also the “Barmaid“, a zippy little product that let’s you rim your cocktail with the push of a button.

If you rather spend your money on SHOES, like me. Just use a small plate or saucer…it does the trick.

Here are some rimmers that are pretty tasty.
