Screaming Orgasm in layers

Making the perfect layered cocktail isn’t as hard you might think.  The main concept is to pour your liquor or liqueurs you are using in order from heaviest to lightest (Spirit Density Chart).   You may need to use a spoon so that upper layers can be poured very slow so that the liquid remains on the top.  You may need to practice a bit to get eventually get it right…but mistakes are never wasted and who knows, you may discover a whole new non-layered cocktail in the process.

There are lots of great layered cocktails to make but my favorite (duh) is the Screaming Orgasm.

Screaming Orgasm (or as other people call it a “B-53″)

½ fl oz vodka
½ fl oz coffee liqueur aka Kahlua
½ fl oz Bailey’s Irish cream liqueur
1 shooter/shot glass
1 barspoon/teaspoon

You can chill the ingredients to make it nice an refreshing.  Firstly take a shooter glass and pour in coffee liqueur.  Next take a teaspoon and hold it to the edge of the glass. Now it’s time to layer Baileys. Finally, layer vodka over the top. Now your cocktail is ready to be served.

Frosting on the Cake…rim your glass

There are so many beautiful, delicious drinks that could use a little “bling” or what I like to call “frosting” by “rimming” the glass.  Popular rims include are, of course, salt, sugar, cocoa powder, spices (for example on a Bloody Mary).

you are unsure of how to do it.  Mix that drink has a nice little “how to” at MixThatDrink.com.  Basically you want to choose whether your rim should be be salty or sweet for taste.  Bloody Mary’s and unflavored Martinis do best with salty or spicy and your tropical or “foo-foo drinks” work best with sugar rims.  The best “glue” or what to use to get it all to stick is either s slice or lemon or lime.

You can use your imagination and mix your own, I’ve used cookie sprinkles in different colors, Nesquik chocolate milk power, and spicy rubs found in gourmet cooking stores for Bloody Mary’s.  There are several companies that make nice little “cocktail kits” that are easy to use and also are fabulous gifts when going to someone’s house for dinner for a nice change from bringing a bottle of wine.

Tools:  There are Drink Rimmers out there that are trays one with a sponge to wet the edge of your glass and then usually another tray for whatever rim flavor you are dipping into.  There is also the “Barmaid“, a zippy little product that let’s you rim your cocktail with the push of a button.

If you rather spend your money on SHOES, like me.  Just use a small plate or saucer…it does the trick.

Here are some rimmers that are pretty tasty.

Super Bowl Sunday is sure to make a Blue Monday

So all the excitement on a Super Bowl Sunday can almost definitely lead to a “Blue Monday”.  Which…fortunately for all of us, is actually a cocktail (surprise surprise).   And if you are feeling the pain from a little too much partying during on game day, don’t worry this one is an easy one.
Blue Monday
1.5 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
1/4 ounce Blue Curacao
Shake with ice,  strain into a martini glass. You can garnish it with an lemon twist,  orange wheel or peel for color contrast or heck, if you’re worn out…just pour it in your glass and call it a day!

A Yummy Leaded Martini

Don’t you just love Vodka? Don’t you just love coffee? Well, The Kahlua Espresso Martini just sounded like a match made in heaven with that extra boost to get you through the rest of the week.

If you don’t have an espresso machine you can use the recipe on the Nestle site that calls for their prepared NESCAFE Espresso or do what I do and just make a strong batch using my French Press.

Kahlua Espresso Martini
1 part Kahlua
1 part vodka
1/2 part fresh brewed espresso

Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously, strain into a chilled martini glass rimmed with course sugar.

I'll take mine a little dirty

Dirty MartiniThe Dry or Dirty Martini came up…well it always comes up for me because that’s how I like my Martinis.  I always order a Vodka Martini, Up, a little Dirty with everything (an olive, onion and a twist, I like a salad in mine…no CHERRY).

What makes the Martini “Dirty” is a little bit of olive juice (or brine) which clouds up.  I love the little bit of salty taste and in general love olives.  So next time you order a Martini try it a little dirty and see how you feel.

Dirty Vodka Martini
2 ounces of vodka
1 tablespoon dry vermouth
1 tablespoon olive brine
Three olives
Gently stir everything but the olives in a shaker full of ice. Strain into a martini glass, garnish with the olives and serve.

Candy Store Vodka…pick up some Skittles

If you have a sweet tooth (a very big sweet tooth) or maybe you’re just adventurous on the cocktail side (and we know that WE ARE), you should try Skittles infused Vodka.  MixThatDrink.com has a fun tutorial on how to make Skittles Infused Vodka.  Sorting the reds out for Valentines Day or any of the other colors to match your mood or your cocktail party’s theme or decor would be fabulous.  If you like the Sour taste, try the Skittles sours.

Chef Ed talks about Vodka Sauce

Chef Ed of One Block West, a restaurant in Winchester, Virgina made a post this morning on their blog, One Blog West and he talks about cooking with Vodka.  He suggests you macerate, which in food terms means “to soak a food in a liquid in order to infuse it with the liquid’s flavor) with the Vodka before adding it to the sauce to make a spicy red pepper extract.  After doing that…I would put a little aside for a spicy Bloody Mary!  Chef Ed also says that the Vodka enhances the flavor of the tomatoes.  So make sure you get some tasty tomatoes.

You either have to stop by Chef Ed’s restaurant, One Block West or try one on your own at home.

Here are a couple to check out.  Seems like most are for over Penne Pasta but I can imagine a lovely Vodka sauce over anything from fish to chicken.  Let us know if you have a great Vodka sauce recipe.

Vodka good for musty clothes

If you can spare a sip from your Cosmo…Janie Bryant, the costume designer for Mad Men recently telling Valet Magazine that spritzing a mixture of 1 part vodka and 2 parts water onto vintage clothing helps to get the musty smell out. After doing a little research of our own we learned it’s because Vodka kills odor causing bacteria and mold. Then mix yourself a cocktail with the leftovers (called upcycling) and voila, your outfit is smelling better by the minute. Pretty neat.
