Chef Ed talks about Vodka Sauce
Chef Ed of One Block West, a restaurant in Winchester, Virgina made a post this morning on their blog, One Blog West and he talks about cooking with Vodka. He suggests you macerate, which in food terms means “to soak a food in a liquid in order to infuse it with the liquid’s flavor) with the Vodka before adding it to the sauce to make a spicy red pepper extract. After doing that…I would put a little aside for a spicy Bloody Mary! Chef Ed also says that the Vodka enhances the flavor of the tomatoes. So make sure you get some tasty tomatoes.
You either have to stop by Chef Ed’s restaurant, One Block West or try one on your own at home.
Here are a couple to check out. Seems like most are for over Penne Pasta but I can imagine a lovely Vodka sauce over anything from fish to chicken. Let us know if you have a great Vodka sauce recipe.

Vodka good for musty clothes
If you can spare a sip from your Cosmo…Janie Bryant, the costume designer for Mad Men recently telling Valet Magazine that spritzing a mixture of 1 part vodka and 2 parts water onto vintage clothing helps to get the musty smell out. After doing a little research of our own we learned it’s because Vodka kills odor causing bacteria and mold. Then mix yourself a cocktail with the leftovers (called upcycling) and voila, your outfit is smelling better by the minute. Pretty neat.
Gems and Chocolate…OH MY
I just love these beautiful gem shaped chocolates by Promise Me Chocolate.
I want this!
This Martini sink by Elkay is amazing!
It's all in the mix
Of course you can have a Bloody Mary Martini! And if you decide to try Hot D Bloody Mary Mix, which is short for Hair of the Dog and is infused with the benefits of an energy drink (hehehehe) you may just want a “tini” glass anyway.
The salt rim is what makes the cocktail as well. I like to shake up a mix of salt, celery salt, cheyenne, and a little bit of tomato powder (which helps it stick to the glass) and then throw a salad in it and your good to go.
Sounds like Jimmy Luv’s Bloody Mary Mix is getting some rave reviews and we can always use another Bloody Mary Mix. My favorite mix is from Tadich Grill in San Francisco…not sure where to find anymore and looks like their website is under construction. I think we need to go there for lunch soon.
Not sure why I’m talking about Bloody Mary’s on a Monday…shoulda had one yesterday at BRUNCH!
I'd name a baby girl Olive
So in searching all thing’s Vodka…came across an adorable blog “Vinyl and Vodka“. Really has absolutely nothing to do with Vodka but I love the logo and the story on the title was very cute.
The name Vinyl and Vodka came from an interesting conversation between Willis and Luis – we were talking about what we would name our babies if they were twins, and one was a boy and one was a girl. In the end he said he would name his girl Vodka, and I would name my boy Vinyl.
If it was a girl…I’d name her Olive!
